Guyanese in fashion..
Caribbeanfamily.com recently sat down with well-known Guyanese and Caribbean fashion designer Sonia Noel. When the name Sonia Noel is mentioned, there are certain things that are bound to enter one's mind; images of a woman who is a Caribbean designer in a Caribbean sense making a significant mark in the fashion industry worldwide. Ms Noel is a very down to earth, caring person and is affiliated with charities that cater to the needs of less fortunate children; such as Joshua's House (Guyana), House of Pearl (Suriname).

According to Sonia, most of her inspiration leading to her exquisite creations comes from God and the natural beauty of Guyana, as a result its is not strange to find her creations depicting Guyana's natural beauty.
Currently residing in Barbados,Sonia maintains strong ties in Guyana and put on fashion shows here quite often. She has two locations in Barbados and though she plans on expanding,presently her creations are being sold in Jamaica, St. Lucia, Tobago and at Essence Exclusive in London.
Her last launch in Guyana was 'Style on the Green' the colour scheme being inspired by the sea,it featured work from her previous lines such as the Absolut line and an expanded version of the Black and White line. Though there are many other fashion designers in the Caribbean her creations stand out because her concepts are different,they are unique, sophisticated and classy. Sonia strongly believes that 'carriage' in important and advises her clients accordingly.Her preference is to work with natural fabrics such as cottons,linens etc. |
What is next from Ms. Noel? She is the main promoter for the upcoming Guyana Fashion Weekend billed for the end of August 2007. This is likely to be the biggest fashion event to ever take place in Guyana and will be covered by international fashion magazines such as Essence,Glamour just to mention a few.
Ms. Noel is a dedicated mother of two and a very creative and hardworking designer, one can only wait to see what her next divinely inspired line will be.
